Teacher education
The University of Cologne believes in the relevance of education for all of society takes up its responsibility for the future. It demonstrates this through excellent, holistic teacher education that encompasses all performance dimensions: Research and Innovation, Studying and Teaching, and Transfer and Cooperations.
Research strength and innovative power
Drawing on renowned research, teacher education strengthens the subject-specific, subject-methodological, and pedagogical skills of future teachers and promotes innovative approaches to learning. The University of Cologne collaborates with over 800 schools in the training region of Cologne. Theory, practice, and research is uniquely combined at the University of Cologne’s very own training and research school, the Inclusive University School (IUS).
Internationality
The University of Cologne is one of Europe’s largest teacher education universities and enjoys a well-established international network. Broad alliances in teaching, learning, and research set a focus on well-being in, for example, the EU-funded projects EUniWell and Teacher Education for a Future in Flux (teff). These alliances realise innovative teacher education together with over ten European partner universities.
Teachers are able to best prepare pupils for working and living in, and engaging with, a globalised world by drawing on their own international and intercultural experiences. This is why the University of Cologne offers student teachers stays abroad with tailor-made programmes at over 90 partner schools and institutions worldwide.
Teaching profession in figures
With over 11,000 students, the teacher education degree programmes account for 27 percent of all students at the University of Cologne.
40 per cent of graduates from the University of Cologne are bachelor's and master's student teachers who have studied to become teachers.
51 per cent of the total number of courses offered at the University of Cologne relate to the teaching profession.
Our responsibility for the future
While facing technological, ecological, and demographic challenges, the University of Cologne practices foresight. It trains and supports prospective teachers in acquiring a scientific habitus during their studies and in enabling students to engage in research-based learning, as an approach to addressing real-world questions.
Teachers are constantly expanding their knowledge based on research and breaking new ground with courage and conviction. In line with the latest research findings, teacher education in Cologne supports teachers in the academic disciplines, subject-specific teaching methodologies, and educational sciences, along with cutting-edge inspiration and future-oriented continued development geared toward their entire careers.
Interdisciplinarity and progress
The UoC Teacher Education Hub is the joint organisation for interdisciplinary collaboration between all persons and institutions involved in teacher education with the purpose of ensuring a research-based, future-oriented and socially relevant teacher education.
