You will teach students in years five to ten (secondary level I) in various types of schools.
What’s involved
As a teacher in a secondary school, you will provide individualized support to students of all ability levels so that they can develop their potential and discover their talents and strengths.
You not only impart specialist knowledge and expertise; you also inspire young people with enthusiasm for the content and questions related to your subjects, and awaken their passion for them.
You encourage children and young people to engage with complex problems and lead them to think critically. You also enable students in heterogeneous learning groups to independently acquire and apply knowledge.
You accompany your students on their learning journeys and provide an education that qualifies them for vocational training or subsequent university studies.
You responsibly support young people in deciding on their further educational path – e.g. whether to begin their work life with an apprenticeship or to attend an upper secondary school to obtain a university entrance qualification.

Degree programme structure
In the Hauptschule, Realschule, Sekundarschule and Gesamtschule teacher education programme, you will study two subjects and educational sciences in roughly equal proportions at the University of Cologne in the Bachelor’s degree and, building on this, in the Master’s degree. Unlike the other teacher education degree programmes, this one involves a more intensive examination of subject-specific didactic issues.

Hinweis Religion
Um sich nach dem Lehramtsstudium für den Vorbereitungsdienst in Evangelischer oder Katholischer Religionslehre bewerben zu können, müssen Sie zwingend der jeweiligen Konfession angehören und bei den zuständigen Stellen eine kirchliche Unterrichtserlaubnis beantragen.
Evangelische Religionslehre: Sie müssen vor dem Vorbereitungsdienst die Vokation (Vocatio) beantragen. Dazu müssen Sie evangelisch sein oder einer evangelischen Freikirche angehören.
Katholische Religionslehre: Sie müssen vor dem Vorbereitungsdienst die missio canonica (Missio) beantragen. Dazu müssen Sie katholisch sein und während des Studiums ein Mentorat absolviert haben.
Hinweis Sport
Für das Fach Sport müssen Sie während des gesamten Studiums sowohl an der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln (DSHS) als auch der Universität zu Köln eingeschrieben bleiben.
Auch dann, wenn Sie alle Leistungen an einer von beiden Hochschule bereits abgeschlossen haben. Nur so kann die Uni Ihnen die Abschlussdokumente ausstellen.
